January 2019 marks the start of a new fiscal year for retail and a new year of resolutions for prospective shoppers. Understanding customer goals around this time of year can help retailers build targeted marketing strategies, and start the shopping year off on strong footing.
We asked shoppers in the Bizrate Insights network what their resolutions were for 2019 to uncover this season’s most popular goal-orientated shopping categories.
When it comes to health resolutions across age categories, responses by age vary significantly, as different demographics view getting fit and losing weight as separate goals. Exercising/getting fit is the most important to respondents in the 25 – 29 and 65 and older categories. Losing weight is the most important to respondents in the 45-49 age group.
Following the trend of fitness goals for 2019, supplements, gym memberships, and gym equipment dominate purchasing interests for new year’s resolution makers. Additionally, data shows that the majority of purchases driven by resolutions will likely be from personal shopping.
Overall, the New Year 2019 spending season appears to be dominated by shoppers setting personal fitness milestones, who are making purchases to work towards those goals. Keep an eye on Bizrate Insights’ blog and social feeds to learn about retail customers’ interests across shopping seasons in 2019.
